In the 1970s, the Super Bowl winner covered the spread 90% of the time. And, it was a safe bet to cover the spread. This decade, the Super Bowl winner covered the spread 30% of the time. Parity in the NFL can turn the 4-12 1999 Rams into next year’s super bowl winner.

In the 1980s (1986 to 1990), the EIA records of the Gulf Coast spot market changed by less than 2 cents 93% of the time. The average change was around 0.78 cents. You could pretty much bet that tomorrow’s price was going to be close to today’s price. This decade, the spot market changed by less than 2 cents 42% of the time. More often than not, tomorrow’s spot price is anybody’s guess. And, volatility in fuel can hamper or even ruin a profitable company.
